CROUSE FAMILY UPDATE (December 2006)
click to return to Crouse home page

We're still trying to catch our breath both literally and figuratively!  Living at 10,000 ft., oxygen is a little scarcer than at lower altitudes.  We occasionally feel out of breath, especially if trying to do some vigorous activity.  It will take a while for our lungs to adjust.  It's been a super busy time since arriving in Tarma on November 16.  We're renting an old house that needed a lot of fix-up before moving in.  Thanks to many folks from the Tarma Free Methodist Church, walls and ceilings were patched and painted and a lot of dirt and grit were chased out of the house.  We moved in on December 4th.  Each day it looks more like a home as we add our personal touches.

We were privileged to be part of the first ever annual conference of the Peru Free Methodist Church.  It was held right here in Tarma.  Some pastors and church representatives traveled two days by bus in order to attend.  This first meeting was a time to connect and also establish a common vision.  We were happy to host Pastora Geovanna from Tacna, Peru and Tanya Metzler from Michigan.  Both are young ladies who are leading the work in Tacna.  The Free Methodist Church in Peru is growing with enthusiasm and looks forward to what God has in store.  The leadership is young and there is a desire to train more able leaders.  Thank you for praying for and supporting the advance of God's kingdom in Peru.  There seems to be a hunger to know God.

Chris Gohl, a business consultant from Michigan, recently spent 3 months here in Tarma researching small-business opportunities for our Christian brothers and sisters.  I was privileged to overlap a month with Chris and get a great jump on what I need to do to assist people in finding creative ways to market their products.  The economy around Tarma is largely based on agriculture.  Peruvian families work hard to produce fruits, vegetables, and meat, but profits are very slim due to low market prices.  Chris has proposed three business plans which have the potential to produce regular and greater revenue.  I'll begin to present these in our next update.

We enjoyed our first Christmas in Peru.  Naturally, we missed our family and loved ones.  Thankfully, we were able to speak with everyone in our immediate family via the internet (even Becky's brother in Mozambique).  At this time of year, we remember Jesus our Savior and we also remember our loving and caring supporters who make it possible to be sharing the Good News of Jesus here in Peru.  We are thankful for the faithfulness demonstrated by God and also the opportunities He has already given us to share His love in this land.

Prayer Requests:
- deepening relationships with co-workers and new friends
- enhancing our speaking ability / tutoring for Marissa to help bring her up to speed before school starts in March
- Marv DeVisser and Keith Bushouse from Spring Arbor, MI coming to work in Tarma Jan 7-18
- wisdom and courage for those considering new businesses in order to care for family and also contribute to the work of reaching out in Jesus' name
