Dear Partners of His Way in Haiti,
We are surprised! After going to Haiti in January of
this year, we are back in Indianapolis awaiting our next
interim assignment until we can return to where God
plans for us to work.
We had a wonderful six months. We studied Haitian Kreyol
formally for two months. During that time, we
established working relationships with Pastor Georges
Valcourt, the director of the Bible School, and the
students as well as with other pastors and missionaries
in the area. We spent five weeks in Dessalines
practicing our language "skills."
Jack had several counseling sessions, began working with
Gregg Ennis, weighed goats with JR Crouse, visited the
rice fields with the hospital administrator, helped
transport food to Mapou, and became a vigilant and
enthusiastic driver in Port-au-Prince.
Jeanne gave an afternoon seminar for women, co-led a
Bible study for the staff of the Dessalines hospital,
taught a few classes at the Bible school, and preached
in two churches.
In the last several months, violence accelerated from
bullets whizzing by our house to as high as 50
kidnappings in a week. As we received bulletins from the
American Embassy and warnings from our Haitian church
leaders, it became increasingly obvious the Free
Methodist missionaries would not remain for long. Our
leaders warned us that we should travel in caravan, then
move to one home, and finally to even travel as a
group. The women were flown out two weeks ago; Jack and
Gregg arrived in the States last Monday.
We are extremely disappointed. However, we know that God
is still working in Haiti, and we will be a part of that
again when the "coast is clear." Elections are to be
held in October and November. Please pray that God will
work a miracle and things will go well. It is thought
that we will be in the States for 6-9 months.
For now, we have been reassigned to the Florida Haitian
people to increase our language and cultural skills.
Your continued prayer and financial support will enable
us to carry on the call of God in working with the
Haitian people in a new venue. We do not know exactly
where as yet in Florida. We left our belongings in
Port-au-Prince. We do not have a car. Please pray for
God's provision in a place to stay and transportation.
We have been trying to re-establish Internet
connections. Thank you for your patience.
Please pray for the precious Haitian people. Many, many
people have lost their jobs; people are closing their
businesses and leaving the country; our hospital is in
desperate financial need; those who had very little food
now have even less.
Our Free Methodist pastors and leaders are awesome.
Please pray for protection for them and their families -
and for strength and wisdom during this time of trial.
The Holy Spirit brought James chapter 1 to us. We are to
rejoice in our trials. How can this be? We believe it
can be done when we focus on what is set before us.
Jesus endured the cross for the joy of what was before
Him. Through our trials patience, perseverance, and
other strong characteristics are reinforced. When we
allow these to develop, we become perfect lacking
nothing. We need to ask God for wisdom - we must ask
believing we have received that wisdom. This means we
must act on that wisdom and continue to move forward in
the Kingdom of God. We trust that God is working in ALL
of these things.
Please pray that we will be patient that our time will
be profitably spent for His kingdom. Attached is a
picture of a 2-year-old girl who lived across the street
from us in Dessalines. One day we heard and saw her
being beaten by her mother. Her eyes haunt us and call
us back to the land we love.
For His kingdom to fully come to Haiti and the world.
Jack and Jeanne Acheson-Munos
