On February 4th The Gerry FMC sent out
a team of eight people to help in the relief and rebuilding efforts in
Gulfport, Mississippi. The team’s ages ranged from 14 to 75 yrs. There
were plenty of opportunities to join in and serve regardless of your age
or skill level. The Team spent one week in the Gulfport area doing
roofing projects, remodeling/repair, cleaning, food and clothing
distribution and working at renovating a head start school. We had the
privilege to team up and work with Dave and Vern Philips and Don Batt
from the Warsaw FMC to complete a roofing job.
This was a very
rewarding experience for all who volunteered. There is so much work to
be done that we all found it difficult to leave. “It felt like we were
leaving an unfinished work” said Jim Heinrich one of our team members as
he recalled our departure. At this time we are planning to go at least
one or maybe two more trips this year.
The people are so
grateful for the help that they are receiving from the churches. The
witness that is being shown by so many Christians from so many
denominations working hand in hand to rebuild this area is having a huge
impact on the people in this area that are so desperately looking for
hope. The love of God is being shown on the Gulf Coast through all those
who have gone and are going to volunteer to meet this need.
