This team of 19
from the Gowanda FMC traveled to Lake Charles, LA to work with Convoy of
Hope. The team's primary task was to assist as volunteers as a
part of a God Cares outreach event. The team spent one afternoon
bagging 5,000 bags of groceries for distribution at the outreach.
Another day was spent setting up the site - at the Chamber of Commerce
right on Lake Charles. Miles and miles of temporary fencing had to
be put up, tents erected, tables set up and chairs placed. Each of
the first two days were spent in 95+ degree heat. On the day of
the outreach, the team served in different areas: security, medical
services, family services, food services and the children's area.
People can come and spend time with their children having fun in the
kid's zone, eating cotton candy and snow cones, playing games, etc.,
they can receive a meal on-site, they can have basic medical needs cared
for, receive a hair cut and go home with groceries. As people go
to leave, they are greeted in the family services tent when information
is taken for follow-up and people share the love of Jesus Christ with
them. At the Lake Charles event, a total of 1,200 people came with
78 people making first time decisions for Jesus Christ. For more
